Upgrading Joomla to the most current version is almost always a good idea. Joomla updates are released to address security vulnerabilities and correct bugs, both which are generaly good things.
If Joomla was the only concern we would definitely reccomend keeping Joomla current with updates as they are released. Unfortunately, the issue is clouded by third party extensions. Before updating Joomla, you must consider all third party extensions, including all third party components, modules and plugins, especially complicated components like Community Builder and VirtueMart. The issue boils down to whether or not the extensions will continue to function properly with the proposed Joomla update. Sometimes updating Joomla can cause third party extensions to stop working or to work incorrectly. Third party extensions also have their own updates that must be considered. Often third party extensions must be updated to work properly with each Joomla update. Before installing an update of Joomla or any third party extension, we recommend checking the web sites of all third party extensions in use on your site to ensure the extensions won't have problems with the proposed Joomla update.
